Including images relating to current or past events in the world gave the challenge or opportunity for readers to figure out what exactly was going on in the drawing, and why.  Some of it could be pretty obscure, but I was more into developing the overall concept and honing my drawing skills than attending to whether or not anyone could understand what was going on. That aspect, I hope has improved, but there have been some pretty arcane references along the way.
